World’s oldest digital computer restarted

One of the world’s oldest digital computers to replace the handwritten calculations of human “computors” is getting an official reboot.

The 61-year-old Harwell Dekatron — about the size and weight of an SUV — was originally hailed as a slow, steady machine capable of delivering error-free calculations while running for 90 hours a week. It has survived to become the oldest original working digital computer following the announcement of its completed restoration by The National Museum of Computing in the U.K. on Tuesday.

Hacked and Digitally Destroyed

Journalist Mat Honan recounts his experience of being hacked and having his systems wiped out.

“In the space of one hour, my entire digital life was destroyed.”

Honan had his Twitter, Gmail, and Apple accounts taken over by his attackers. The hackers posted obscenities on the Twitter feed, searched his Gmail account to obtain other passwords and details about his life and most drastically, used the Apple login to trigger remote wipes of his iPad, MacBook and iPhone. All of which happened a minute after obtaining his first password. Some online commentators were quick to blame Honan for his lack of security but really we should all be working together to ensure that such personal hacks are made impossible to carry out.

Tracking the trackers !

Gary Kovacs the CEO of the Mozilla Corporation speaks about the growth of behavioural tracking and his concerns.

As you surf the Web, information is being collected about you. Web tracking is not 100% evil — personal data can make your browsing more efficient; cookies can help your favorite websites stay in business. But, says Gary Kovacs, it’s your right to know what data is being collected about you and how it affects your online life. He unveils a Firefox add-on to do just that.
